Self-Made Mom

What can I say? Sometimes being a mom is challenging. But I've found a large dose of humor helps any chaotic day go a little better. Like when your angel child poops in the bathtub. Laugh it off. Or upon receiving a spray bath of pureed sweet potatos, ah, I think, that's good for my complexion.

But one woman, the sister of one of my fave wedding clients, decided to take the humor to the world. On her blog, Self-Made Mom, she spins her chaotic life as a now stay-at-home mom into a wonderfully light daily read for the rest of us. If you stay at home even part-time with your child you must scroll down to read the post "Oh, the Places I'm Not Going." If nothing more it's a perfect reminder that being a mom is a job, with amazing benefits, that must be managed with a smile.

3 month old comfy at home...

Her father has a rule in life: don't rush into anything. Having a baby was no different. As all children do though, she stole his heart at first sight. We photographed this little nugget at her home. Only 3 months old, she's making great strides lifting her head and smiling for the camera. Be sure to check out her red boots...she couldn't stop looking at them!

More children studio work

These two came in to do a surprise Valentine's portrait for their father. They were so at ease in front of the camera I had both these shots within seconds of shooting. I love the honesty of a black and white portrait. My eyes go straight to hers and I can still hear his laughter.

Seeing the future

Every so often I'll see the future through a single portrait. In the blink of my camera's shutter the chubby face and round jaw line of his baby years magically disappear leaving behind a glimpse of the more defined features he'll wear later in life.

An Urban Session

I have been photographing the portrait of this little boy since he was just 6 days old. My, my how they grow! This is what I love about children's portraits. Every time they come in I have a brand new subject with a brand new personality.

Life's a Stage

These two cuties took to the stage we created with no problem! With the rugged background we were going for a vintage-inspired look. They had fun playing peek-a-boo behind the curtain!

Twin Boys = laughter & running

Lot's of running! These two angels didn't sit for more than a few seconds at a time. But with their energy came enough laughter and smiles to fill a lifetime.

Happy New Year

The end of one year and beginning of a new I can't help but to reminisce. 2008 brought many changes to my life, professionally and personally. Like many of you, Scott and I welcomed a daughter into the world. Our lives quickly shifted gears from wine bottles to milk bottles, from late nights with friends to late nights in a rocking chair...but most importantly from an independent life to a fulfilling one.

It has been a beautiful year with each of you as well. Because of you...my client, my friend, my family...I have grown as a stronger photographer. 2009 will bring more wonderful families and children into my life. I look forward to each and every one of you ...to hearing your stories and capturing your lives and your loves.
